We're leaving this morning for a couple of West Texas shows. First we stop at
Luna. Luna is one of our favorite places to play in the entire state. Beautiful jazz club with a nice stage and a grand piano. The club will be recording the show and will choose one cut for their "Live at Luna" jazz compilation CD. We're excited to be a part of it.
Friday we head to Lubbock for a show at
Jake's. This is our fourth stop in Lubbock, but our first time at Jake's. We will hit
KTXT for a radio interview before the show, so all you Texas Tech. folks, tune in. (PS. later this year, April 1, we will be opening for
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey at Jake's, um...RAD).
Live archive track this week is
Wreck of the Zephyr from
last week's show at the Meridian.
Looks like
Jazz is alive and well in San Antonio. We'll be there tomorrow night at
Luna, and we'll be recording a live CD, so come down and listen. :)
What a weekend.
Friday night we had the honor of opening up for
Particle on the big stage at the
Meridian. We decided that an hour of prog. rock was in order for the occasion. Set list:
Improv.
Wreck of the Zephyr
Leap
The Big S.O.
Mothership
Shelby Gets a Nosebleed
Barmecide
Robot Suit I
Abbey Rhodes
Flux
Last night we had a blast playing with
The Lewis Band and
Drop at
Last Concert Cafe. Ian made some really cool noise with his
new toy. I can only imagine what will happen when he actually learns how to use it. :)
I think the set went something like this:
Wake the Whale
L.U.G.
Hoodini Goldenrod
Mothership
Shelby's Head Caught Fire
Flux
Wet Dog
Invisible Pants
Improv.
The Big S.O.
Tonight come on out to the main stage at the
Meridian. We've had a last minute invite to fill in for
Drums & Tuba and open for
Particle.
Door - 7pm
Show - 9pm
Tickets - $13
Also, we have a new track up on the
Live Archive.
Robot Suit I from our first show at the Meridian
11/12/04 made the cut this week.
Big thanks to
Jambase for sending out a really
awesome looking email yesterday about 3 shows we've got coming up. We'll be at
Last Concert Cafe on Saturday night, and then next weekend we'll be in at
Luna in San Antonio (Thursday) and
Jake's Sports Cafe in Lubbock (Friday). Hope to see you there!
Props go out to our pal John Fulbright in Beaumont - concert promoter, radio personality and photographer extraordinare. His latest photography show was
just covered in the Beaumont paper. Go John!
This is one of John's many great shots of Drop Trio:
This blog got two nice mentions recently ... first, a link from Blogger.com in an article called
So you wanna be a blogstar (thanks, Grant!). And second, on a new web site called
Band Weblogs. Thanks y'all!
We just recently passed 200 friends on MySpace ... we're officially dorks now. Woot!
(Actually, it's not that dorky - I hear
all the cool kids are doing it . Even some of the
uncool kids. Hell, even
Nuje.)
All reports from Friday night at Brasil point to a rocking show by the
Psychodillos. From the desk of Leslie S., a friend of the band:
Just wanted to thank those of you who made it out to the show. I for one am very proud of the guys and their newest addition, Jordan Wright. I am telling you... the kid has got it going on!!! As always it was yet another great night for awesome grooves, family
fun and of course good eats at Brasil. A special thanx to Graham & Jen Guest and Ian Tomsic for coming out to show their love and support. Also to Jeremy Horton for his never ending (behind the scene) support, you guys ROCK!!!
To paraphrase the Lubbock Hubstuff (may it rest in peace) ... "If you get a chance to see the Psychodillos, do it!"
Tonight at
Funk Jazz Fridays, catch our pals the Psychodillos. (This is a schedule change - no Drop Trio tonight.) 10 pm @ Brasil, 2604 Dunlavy, Houston, TX.
Also check out this week's
live archive track -
Wake The Whale from last week's show at Brasil.
Rest in peace,
Jimmy.
So the band had a little surprise outing yesterday - we played a Mardi Gras show in Galveston with guitarist
Kenny Cordray and singer Raz Mathius (lead singer of long-time Houston funk kings Beat Temple). We were scheduled for an outdoor stage, but due to inclement weather we were moved to the 3rd floor of
Fuddruckers. Who'd have pegged Drop Trio for entertainment at Fuddruckers? Not I.
Anyway, the gig was really cool, mainly because of Kenny and Raz. The highlights were a 10 minute rendition of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile and a long exploratory romp through War's
Slippin' Into Darkness. Those might have to become regular additions to the DT repertoire. If we have any room left after all the Rush songs, that is.
Anyway, it was a super cool time. Patrick decided in hindsight that he should have entered the crawfish eating contest after all. Ian's attempts to liberate all the crawfish ended up in disaster. Nuje shouldn't have gotten the milkshake.
You can catch Ian (sans the other 2/3rds of DT) playing with Kenny again on the afternoon of Feb. 19th, for Kenny's CD release party on Smokin' Joe's Roadhouse (streaming live on
KPFT). And of course, later that night, come out to the Last Concert Cafe for a show with
The Lewis Band and
Drop (from Boston).
** - Footnote: Beat Temple was also the alma mater of Moses Guest's keyboard player, Rick Thompson. And FYI, we hear from the other Moses Guest band members that Rick is making a good recovery and is home from the hospital, and thanks everyone for the well wishes.
The current SxSW lineup was
just announced on their web site. In addition to Drop Trio, there are quite a few of our other Houston friends listed on there:
Hayes Carll
Chingo Bling
The Fatal Flying Guilloteens
Lise Liddell
The Linus Pauling Quartet
LRJ (who features a Drop Trio song on his track The Ol' Hood)
Calvin Owens
Mando Saenz
Plus, several of
Dan Workman's bands will be playing at Agave on Thursday the 17th (Southern Backtones, Hollister Fracus, and more, plus a special Dan Workman fronted version of Drop Trio).
In addition,
The Bad Plus will be playing in Austin on March 16th (location TBA). Um, let me see ... rad! If you're going to be in Austin during the week, leave a comment.
Last minute news flash - Ian will be appearing tonight at the
Continental Club playing keys with
Moses Guest. Come on out if you're around, should be a blast.
Tonight we return to Brasil for
Funk Jazz Fridays for the first time in 8 weeks. We have a special guest tonight. Marty Reczek from
Little Brother Project sitting in on percussion during our second set.
The
live archive track this week is Invisible Pants recorded last weekend at
Helios.
