Fat Tuesday
So the band had a little surprise outing yesterday - we played a Mardi Gras show in Galveston with guitarist Kenny Cordray and singer Raz Mathius (lead singer of long-time Houston funk kings Beat Temple). We were scheduled for an outdoor stage, but due to inclement weather we were moved to the 3rd floor of Fuddruckers. Who'd have pegged Drop Trio for entertainment at Fuddruckers? Not I.
Anyway, the gig was really cool, mainly because of Kenny and Raz. The highlights were a 10 minute rendition of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile and a long exploratory romp through War's Slippin' Into Darkness. Those might have to become regular additions to the DT repertoire. If we have any room left after all the Rush songs, that is.
Anyway, it was a super cool time. Patrick decided in hindsight that he should have entered the crawfish eating contest after all. Ian's attempts to liberate all the crawfish ended up in disaster. Nuje shouldn't have gotten the milkshake.
You can catch Ian (sans the other 2/3rds of DT) playing with Kenny again on the afternoon of Feb. 19th, for Kenny's CD release party on Smokin' Joe's Roadhouse (streaming live on KPFT). And of course, later that night, come out to the Last Concert Cafe for a show with The Lewis Band and Drop (from Boston).
** - Footnote: Beat Temple was also the alma mater of Moses Guest's keyboard player, Rick Thompson. And FYI, we hear from the other Moses Guest band members that Rick is making a good recovery and is home from the hospital, and thanks everyone for the well wishes.
